Georgia reports first pediatric flu death

Georgia reports its first pediatric flu death, according to the Georgia Department of Public Health.

The Coweta county coroner's office has identified the victim as 15 year old Kira Molina.

In a written release from the coroner, the teen was not feeling well on January 25th, her parents took her to a clinic where she was tested for flu and found to be negative. On January 28th her parents found her unresponsive and called 911. She was taken to Piedmont Newnan Hospital and then transported to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. She was tested for flu and it came back positive. She died at the hospital on Jan 30th due to liver failure due to Influenza A.

“Right now we have 37 confirmed deaths in the state of Georgia,” said Georgia Department of Public Health Commissioner, Patrick O'Neal.

“It takes a bit of time to do the confirmation so I wouldn’t be surprised to see that number grow considerably.”

Dr. O’Neal is asking Georgians, if at all possible, go to their regular doctors or healthcare provider instead of Emergency rooms because they are so packed with flu patients.

“Emergency departments in Georgia right now are extraordinarily busy,” Dr. O’Neal said. “In fact in the Atlanta area you may have heard that Grady has pulled in a portable unit to extend their emergency department.”

O’Neal offers this advice to those who may already be infected with the flu virus.

“Don’t spread it to others. Don’t go into areas where there are a lot of people, like going to church, or going to school, or coming to work. When you get sick, stay at home, stay as isolated as you can so that others don’t fall prey to the disease.”
