With just days left before Christmas, this will be among the busiest shopping weekends this holiday season.
The Gwinnett Police Department will have extra officers patrolling parking lots at ten malls and retail centers throughout the county through Sunday.
“Pretty much all the hours that they are open for shopping, we have officers just assigned to the retail area to handle any calls and to be highly visible and hoping to deter some crime,” says Cpl. Jake Smith.
He tells WSB’s Sandra Parrish the officers are being paid as if they are working extra jobs for the county.
“This is not anything paid for by the individual stores or the mall or anything like that, this is just a service provided by the police department to the shopping community,” he says.
Smith advices shoppers as a precaution to not to fill their cars with packages and then return to the stores for fear thieves are watching.
“What we’ll see a lot of is a shopper coming out, leaving a package, going back into the store or maybe driving to a totally different store and when they go in the second time, that’s when they’re robbed,” he says.
Smith says to always make sure you are aware of your surroundings.
