More than a week after he collapsed along a busy Gwinnett County road, a man only known as “John Doe” has finally been identified.

Gwinnett police investigators have learned he is 62-year-old John Philip Rogers of Duluth, a history teacher who retired from Norcross High School last year.

Cpl. Ed Ritter says after police released his picture from the hospital, someone who used to work with Rogers in the school system contacted them.

From there, investigators were able to get in touch with Roger’s son.

“They forwarded a picture of Mr. Rogers to the son in California and he was 95 percent positive that was his father,” says Ritter.  “He flew out here and positively identified John Doe as his father.”

Ritter says Rogers would often take long walks or bike rides from his Duluth home and was found about a mile away after collapsing from a heart attack.  He died three days later.
