Ground is broken on new development at Coolray Field

When Gwinnett Braves come to opening day April 11, they will see more than just a ballgame. Ground has finally broken on a mixed-used development that will include apartments, retail, and hotel space just beyond the outfield.

“The fans will literally get to see the structure come out of the ground this season,” says Stan Hall, executive director of the Gwinnett Sports Commission.

He tells WSB’s Sandra Parrish the idea was first conceived when the stadium was built six years ago, but put on hold due to the downturn in the economy.

“It’s very similar was the Atlanta Braves are doing in Cobb as far as mixed use around the stadium,” says Hall. “This is just a little smaller version, obviously, but one that’s pretty much in the same business model as they have out there.”

He says the commission visited similar developments in other cities including Fort Wayne, Indiana and believes it will be a big boost to the Gwinnett Braves.

“By adding projects such as this, I think it will only enhance our fan base… we’ll have people who actually live adjacent to the field,” says Hall.

During the first phase, just over 200 apartments will be built with completion expected by opening day next year. Retail space will be then be added as well as a hotel.
