MABLETON - A 30-year-old man and his girlfriend are charged with murdering the suspect grandfather after he was found dead inside his truck.
Edward Smith, 78 of Lilburn, had been missing since Thursday. He was found dead Tuesday night inside his truck on Kemolay Road in Mableton, Sgt. Dana Pierce with Cobb police told WSB.
Police are treating the case as a homicide, even though an autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.
Smith’s grandson, Casey Ryan Collins, 30, and Collins’ girlfriend, Sarah Elizabeth Cook, 23, both of Mableton are in jail and charged with felony murder, Pierce said. They are being held without bond.
“This is a very difficult case, this is a very unusual case,” Piece said. “It happened very quickly. Once the information got to Cobb authorities and they were able to interview both of these individuals. There is certainly more to this than meets the eye.”
Smith apparently was in pretty good health, so investigators aren’t sure if he went out on his own to Mableton or “there is more to this,” Pierce said.
Police say the motive was robbery and they stabbed and strangled him.
