GGC hits record enrollment, students complain about parking

With Georgia Gwinnett College at a record number for enrollment, students are complaining that parking is a growing issue.

When classes began last week, nearly 10,000 students were on the rolls with just 4,000 spaces at the mostly commuter school.

“Sometimes I get here an hour to an hour-and-a-half early just to find a space and to walk to class,” says Junior Brittney Van Valkenburgh.

She remembers when students could once park right in front of their classes. But as the young college has grown, some parking lots have given way to new buildings.

“There are fewer spaces, but we also increased our overflow parking,” says Public Safety Director Terrance Schneider. “We‘ve added on over 400 additional overflow parking in gravel lots.”

He tells WSB’s Sandra Parrish the number of spaces is adequate since not all of the students attend class at the same time.

The college also uses social media to get the word out about available spaces or lots that are full.

In the future, Schneider says they hope to work with the city of Lawrenceville to identify space for additional parking lots as well as a possible shuttle service that may even take students into downtown Lawrenceville.
