Fate of DeKalb school board on hold

Information from the AP was used in this report

The Georgia Board of Education has voted to meet again with members of the troubled DeKalb County school board.

WSB’s Jon Lewis reports nine DeKalb County school board members attended a meeting Thursday in Stone Mountain to testify in front of state officials as to why they should not be suspended after the district was placed on probation through the end of 2013.

An audit from an accreditation agency found evidence of fiscal mismanagement and unethical practices. An additional hearing has been scheduled for Feb. 21.

State education officials will make a recommendation to Gov. Nathan Deal, who has final say on whether members of the DeKalb County School Board should be suspended or fired.

With over 98,000 students enrolled, the DeKalb County School District is the third largest in the state.
