The effects of Monday’s bomb attacks at the Boston Marathon are already rippling through the metro area’s law enforcement community.
A week from Sunday, when more than 70 restaurants are expected to draw at least 100,000 people to the Marietta square for a day of food and music, security will be tighter than it was at the same celebration just a year ago.
“We had meetings... (Tuesday) to ensure that what we’re doing for these upcoming events is appropriate,” said Marietta Police Officer David Baldwin. “In this case, we will bring in bomb dogs from other jurisdictions to sweep high-profile areas and to have them on call.”
That is in addition to the four-story control tower-like monitoring station the department uses to monitor such events, as well as the T-3 carrier devices officers use to travel among crowds.
Baldwin said the changes are part of an effort to not only increase security, but to increase the feeling of safety among those attending major activities like the Taste of Marietta.
