Elderly woman's murder leaves police hunting suspect

Ken Milam woke up Tuesday morning to see police cars and an ambulance at his neighbor’s house across Aviation Road in Marietta.

“At first I thought it was a water main break or something like that,” he told WSB’s Pete Combs. But in fact, it was something much more sinister.

Milam’s 86-year old neighbor, Juanita Calvert, had been shot to death in her home as her disabled 85-year old partner lay helplessly nearby.

“It’s kind of frightening… makes you wonder how she died,” said Milam, a resident of the neighborhood for just one month.

Milam says both the woman and her husband were in hospice care. In fact, her body was discovered by a home health worker who frequently visited to care for both of them.

“The caregiver actually found the woman deceased and called 911,” said Marietta Police Officer David Baldwin. “I can confirm at this time that she was shot.”

Baldwin would not say what investigators think happened in this small home on Aviation Road, but records show Calvert and her partner, Phillip Van Zandt, were bilked out tens of thousands of dollars between December 19, 2013 and March 1, 2013. Antione Maurice Davis, 36, of Smyrna, was arrested in May and charged with exploiting the elderly and theft by taking. A criminal warrant issued March 30 indicated Davis was so trusted by Calvert and Van Zandt that the elderly couple allowed him access to their checkbook so he could write out his paycheck. But instead of $1,500 every two weeks, he wrote checks totaling $41,690.

Davis was arrested in May and later freed on $100,000 bond. Marietta Police refused comment on whether Davis is a suspect in this case.

Van Zandt was not hurt in the gunfire that killed Calvert, according to Baldwin. However, he was transported to Kennestone Hospital, because he is unable to care for himself.
