Dunwoody lawmaker: New cities should get own school system

A state lawmaker from Dunwoody wants Georgia's newest cities to be able to create their own school systems.

Rep. Tom Taylor (R-Dunwoody) says it comes in wake of troubles with the DeKalb school board.

“We have the highest millage rate in the state of Georgia for schools, they’re still running a deficit, and we have a failing school system,” he tells WSB’s Sandra Parrish.

The city of Dunwoody passed a resolution in November indicating its desire to have its own school system.

Taylor believes the city and those created since 2005 could do a better job.

“We’ve done well with municipalities, we’re running surpluses and over-delivering on services when the counties we’re contained within are losing money,” he says.

Georgia’s constitution would have to be amended after it was changed in 1983 to prevent any more independent school systems from being formed.

If passed two-thirds of the Legislature and approved by voters in 2014, Taylor’s amendment would allow those cities to create their own school districts or partner together.
