The marathon bombings left a mark on Boston and many of the bombing victims are left with scars that will need care and treatment for months and even years to come.
SkinCare Physicians in Chestnut Hill, MA is offering free state of the art laser treatment to anyone who was injured in the attack.
Board certified Atlanta plastic surgeon Dr. John Connors says, breakthroughs in the last few years have dramatically improved the treatment of scars from burns, and traumatic injuries, like the ones sustained in the Boston bombings.
"War has revolutionized the way we treat acute injuries", says Dr Connors.
He says a number of the doctors who treated the patients in Boston were Army and military surgeons who had seen these kind of injuries before. Technology and techniques used to treat wounded warriors is the same that's being used to treat the Boston bombing victims.
Connors says, “The biggest challenge will be rehabilitation which can takes months."
New precise laser technology will be used to treat some of the bombings victims.
"These lasers are like a sniper shooting at a target", says Connors.
Lasers can significantly improve or remove both dark color and redness from scars. New ablative fractional resurfacing lasers combined with medications have shown dramatic improvements in texture, flexibility, function and appearance of scarred tissue.
Conners says the biggest challenge for the Boston bombing victims will be the emotions. Scars heal but the emotional scars last much longer.
