Even though the neighbors are furious, Paulding County leaders approved the money to pay for the expansion that will bring commercial flights to small airport.
Tuesday evening the County Commission voted 3-1 to approve the 10-year bond worth $3.4 million.
The Paulding County airport commission unanimously approved the money for the taxiway extension Tuesday morning.
The only commissioner who voted against the plan was the man who represents the affected area, Todd Pownall. He, like many others, was not told of airports expansions plans in advance. Pownall says he can’t support it “because of the way they’ve done things.”
"We shouldn't be doing things like that to our people," said Pownall. "We should put it out front because now look what it's done. It makes me angry that I wasn't there to represent the people. That's what makes me angry."
But Airport manager Blake Swafford says everyone should have known what was going on because the airport deal was discussed at several different Airport Authority meetings over the past 14 months.
But residents still aren’t convinced.
"Obviously, you are intoxicated with your power beyond reason if you think your residents are willing to accept being treated with zero respect and such little regard," said opponent Susan Wilkins.
The airport is now being called Silver Comet Field at Paulding Regional Airport.
It’s all part of a deal reached two weeks ago between the Airport Authority and Propeller Investments
Propeller Investments says it’s already in talks with some airlines to begin commercial service and was working on proposals to lure aerospace and aviation companies to the airport.
