(WSB Radio) -- The appeal of a 911 operator who was fired for making several mistakes and delaying help to a dying woman has been delayed.
The hearing for Gina Conteh had been scheduled for August 28, but Felecia Church with Fulton County tells WSB it has been postponed after Conteh's lawyer, Rory Starkey, asked for an extension.
Starkey says he won't make any statements about the Conteh case...that we'll have to wait for the hearing. Im not making any statements. Im presenting her case and her side will be heard then, said Starkey.
Fulton Countys Personnel Board has the authority to overturn the decision to terminate Contech for her actions.
Officials say Conteh made several mistakes when she routed help for Darlene Dukes to southwest Atlanta rather than her apartment in Johns Creek, north of the city.
Dukes died from a blood clot in her lung. An ambulance didnt arrive until an hour after her initial call for help.
Conteh had worked for Fulton nearly 12 years when she was fired. During that time, she piled up a 2,100-page personnel record that included charges for sleeping on the job, tardiness, insubordination and mistakes routing emergency calls.
At least twice before, Contehs superiors moved to fire her for mistakes she made. Both times she kept her job. She also served at least half a dozen suspensions for various infractions.
What others are saying
- Law Suit comingWow...with what she has previously been written up for and NOT been fired for. Then she makes this huge blunder...can anyone say Negligent Retention on part of Fulton County? She should have been gone a long time before. She must not be to smart to want to keep her job...or is it that NO one else can get a job. Let's thank and support all of the 911 operators/dispatchers that DO a good job because they are instrumental in Emergency services.
- 911 OperatorWhen this incompetent operator is reinstated, and she probably will be, I can only hope and pray someone dear to me doesn't get her for emergency services.
- This lady has something on Fulton to have a record like hers and still be working thereNo, "personnel boards" and government unions have made it next to impossible to fire somebody for doing a poor job, It's just like in school where failing performers are promoted. America is accepting poor performance so that feelings aren't hurt!
- Fulton CountyA job with Fulton County means a job for life, irregardless of performance. The county government is chock-full of incompetent and apathetic employees. It's no wonder that Sandy Springs, Milton, and John's Creek have decided to break away and form their own governments. Conteh wouldn't have lasted a day in the world of private business.
- This lady has something on Fulton to have a record like hers and still be working there.
