Holiday Gift Guide 2013: 12 gifts for $120 and less

From clothing to electronics, there are tons of holiday gift options. The downside of having lots of choices is that people get lost and ultimately buy something that's just "okay".

In order to cut the research time for you, I found 12 excellent gift choices that you'll be confident in giving and on top of that, they all come in at under $120.

(All items were hand selected. Some were sent by stores for final review and others I purchased).

1. Blush Mystery Beauty Box. I recently wrote about The untraditional holiday gift? A guide to your top snack, beauty and kid's subscription boxes and one thing that was missing from the guide was this subscription box.

blushbeautybox
The box is a mix of full and travel-size products worth at least $100. It is filled with a variety of high quality products for your skin and nail. The selections change from month to month, so if you order this month, you'll get the December box. From the choices, I completely fell in love the Deborah Lippmann nail polishPrice: $34.95 for one-time purchase or as low as $24.95 with subscription. With this coupon from Blush.com, you can save $5 off the December Blush Mystery Beauty Box and get free shipping.

2. Silk Robe from Novica. If you want to buy something that's handmade ethically from around the world, Novica connects you to the artisans. No sweat shops or child labor is used to create these beautiful pieces.

novicasilkrobe
From the many items, I chose a silk robe by Arthur Karvan. The robe has a palm fronds print that is created by hand with a silk screen technique. To make it extra-special, the robe is sent to you with a special note by the person who made it (a very special unexpected touch that brings their world to you). The moment you wear it, think luxury vacation. It took me to a beautiful spot in Southeast Asia.Price: Currently on sale for $72.99 (you can save an extra $7 on your first purchase).

3. Vers 1Q Bamboo Bluetooth Speaker. While it comes in a small 3" hand-crafted bamboo cube, it's a sound-system that fills up any room. If you're looking for a perfect gift for the music lover, this is it!

vers
The speaker is aesthetically pleasing and the sound released from the speaker is beautiful (it literally filled up my entire first floor and you could hear it on the second floor as well). My neighbor was impressed with the quality of the sound and said that it surpassed the Bose system (you can't judge it by its size). I love it so much, I am going to buy another one for my children's room. Price: $120 atBambeco (save an extra 15% off orders $100 or more, plus free shipping).

4. Your Bijoux Box. Are you trying to score some major points with a special woman in your life? This jewelry subscription box will do just that and then some. It's a hand-curated jewelry subscription box that picks the most stylish jewelry to coordinate with your current-trend wardrobe.

bijoux box
When I saw the black jewelry bags filled with 2 gorgeous necklaces, it was literally love-at-first-sight (I received the October box). Plus, it came with a bonus twin circle gold necklace that you can get for free with purchase with this exclusive couponPrice: $35 for one-time purchase, but you can opt to go for a 3-12 month subscription which lowers the monthly price.

5. Handmade Shark Slippers. I am a big fan of receiving and giving gifts that are unique and outside-of-the-box. On my quest to find my husband a cute gift that would make him smile, I came across these handmade shark slippers on Uncommon Goods.

" alt="shark1" width="640" height="480" />
The moment I laid my eyes on it, I could picture my husband watching Breaking Bad with a beer in one hand and shark slippers on both feet. They are super-comfy, well-made, unique and I will totally steal them on various occasions to get my shark on! Price: $38.

6. Rainbow Loom. If you haven't already started making your own rubber-band bracelets or necklaces, this is the newest craze among kids and adults.

rainbowloom
If you're a parent, you know all too well that kids are sporting their bracelets as a fashion statement or they're begging you to buy them a box. For any child 8 and up, this will be the go to gift this holiday season. The best part is that it comes in at less than $20 with tax. Price: $16.99 at Michaels.

7. Sabatino & Co. Premium White Truffle Oil 3.2 oz 100th Year Collection. Any foodies in the house? If you're a foodie or know a foodie, this is the perfect Christmas gift that will enhance any menu.

sabatino
I put truffle oil on almost everything I eat when I have it available. From french fries to pasta, it really takes any regular food item to the next level. The truffle oil was included in Oprah's Truffle Popcorn Kit from her favorite things for 2013, plus GMA featured it on their showPrice: $31.

8. International Star Registry Deluxe Star Kit. If you want to give a gift of a lifetime, why not brighten up someone's day by naming a star after them. Not only will you have the opportunity to name a star, you can also decide on a dedication date which can be any special day (between 4/1/2012-12/31/2014) and choose your constellation.

star1
The whole process takes less than a minute and the best part is that you can view a digital copy online as soon as you get your purchase confirmation in your inbox.

The beautiful personalized certificate comes in a 20" x 16" frame with the star name, date and coordinates. Also included are a personalized 16" X 12" sky chart that contains the star name, star date, the constellation (location circled in red where the star is in the sky), a wallet-sized card, a booklet on astronomy and a letter of congratulations or memorial.

For me, I had mine personalized with my best-friend's name (my children's godmother who passed) and the date she passed. When my children miss her, they can look up at the sky, look at the stars and know that she is out there. The gift is priceless in my book. If you want to get a gift for someone who has everything, I think it's about time to name a star after them or someone that they dearly miss. Price: $109.95 for Deluxe Star Kit, but prices start at $54.00. Use this coupon to save 10% on your Deluxe Star Kit Purchase$97.50 after coupon + $17 for shipping (less than $120 total).

9. pursecase. If you like to accessorize your phones for whatever reason; fashion statement, protection, functionality, a new case has hit the scenes to make your phone a little Chanel-y, stylish and super-functional. It has a pocket in front for you to store your important business cards and credit cards and the flap has a mirror so that you can look great throughout the day.

pursecase
I discovered these cases while watching an episode of Shark Tank. While Robert Herjavec said that he already saw similar cases all over Europe, it was the first time for me (maybe, I should travel to Europe more often, not that I have yet). So I immediately ran a search on Amazon and came up with similar cases but nothing as cute as the pursecase. When Lori Greiner said she saw a "superhero" in the cases, I couldn't agree anymore.

It's one of this season's hot things to have. Currently available only for iPhone 4/4S, iPhone 5 and Galaxy S4 smartphones (but my S3 fits into the case, it covers the speakers and I cannot use the flash, but it fits!). The original retail price was $38 (pre-Shark Tank days) but they were able to bring the price down significantly. Price: $19.75 on QVC, currently on sale for $18.12 and $29 direct on their website.

10. Assets Red Hot Label Spanx Shaping Leggings. Just in time for the new year, why not give the perfect shapewear to the right person? Of course, I wouldn't suggest giving this to your boss or someone you just met, but giving this to your mom or sister may score you some brownie points. Looking slimmer never hurts!

spanxassets
When I got these leggings, I noticed the leggings were not cotton. Since I'm a cotton kind of gal, I was ready to dismiss them on the spot. But...I decided to try them on first before making any assumptions. I'm glad I did. Even though I wasn't that crazy about the nylon-y material, I was impressed with the fit and I felt like I had gotten a body lift. Everything felt compact, lifted and stretched. Price $38 (Spend $50 or more and save $10 on your purchase).

11. VentureHeat Heated Hand Warmers. How many gifts have you received that ended up somewhere in the back of the closet? I'm a big fan of practical gifts that people can actually use in their day to day lives.

ventureheat
If you know someone who commutes on the transit system in the cold or have a friend that enjoys outdoor hikes or winter sports, these would make for the ideal gift. I'm sure they'll be thinking about you when they are warming their hands in the dead cold of winter.

It's a lightweight pouch that you conveniently wear around your waist. There are adjustable straps and a pocket for you to store keys or small devices. Just charge your battery, attach it into the pouch and you are set. Here's to warmer hands! Price: On sale for $69.99, originally $99.99 (you can alsosave an extra 10% on your entire purchase).

12. Yummy Cupcakes Cupcake in a Jar 4-Pack. Last but not least, a dessert gift that can melt anyone's heart. If you know anyone with a sweet tooth, they will love having their cupcake in a jar.

yummycupcakes
I'm a big fan of Yummy Cupcakes because they're one of the few cupcakeries that sell both regular cupcakes and vegan cupcakes (I eat the latter). The taste is rich, moist, soft and divine. One of their signature items is the cupcake in a jar. Just think of it as a deconstructed cupcake all layered into a jar of yummyness. Every spoonful is something to be experienced. Can I say, love at first taste?

It's a perfect gift for pretty much anyone. If you decide to give these out at the office, make sure you have enough for everyone because these cannot be shared (no one will want toPrice: $26 + Shipping.

  • A Gwinnett County family is trying to make sense of the murder of their husband and father outside their home in a Buford subdivision overnight Thursday. The victim, identified as 43-year-old George Young, was shot dead right outside his own front door. He had just come home from working a security job and his keys were still in the front door when he was shot twice. “I heard two loud gunshots,” says his wife Tia. “At first, I thought it was gunshots, but I wasn’t sure what it was. I wasn’t sure if it was firecrackers.” Her brother, who was asleep on the couch, heard it too. He opened the door to find Young lying on the front porch. “I never heard a car speed off. My brother didn’t either,” says Tia. Gwinnett Police detectives told the woman it does not appear to have been a robbery. “We don’t know where the gunshots came from--whether they came from the porch or came from the street. But our ultimate motive, right now, is to figure out what other people heard,” says Cpl. Michele Pihera. She is asking anyone with information to come forward to police. Tia and her husband had been married close to 23 years and she wonders how she will continue alone raising their three sons. “I lost my dad a few years back to suicide, and I didn’t think it could any worse. But losing a spouse like this, I think it tops that,” she says.

His coworkers noticed his dedication biking 46 minutes each way to work. They started a pool to raise money to help get Robinson reliable transportation.  'It was really starting to get cold and he was riding his bike to work with snow pants on in order to handle the cold,' Kimberly Norris, Glastender vice president told MLive.com. Before he got the car, employees helped Robinson practice so he could pass his driving test. The following day, just before his 19th birthday, Robinson was given an Oldsmobile Alero, complete with a red bow on the roof. Employees were even able to pay for a year’s worth of insurance.  'I've been driving it for the whole weekend and even though, every time I get ready to step foot in the car, I'm like, 'I can't believe this is happening',' Robinson told WJRT.
  • Republican U.S. Sen. Jeff Flake was caught on an open microphone saying that the GOP is 'toast' if it follows President Donald Trump and Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore.Flake was talking to the mayor of the Phoenix suburb of Mesa offstage Friday after speaking at a town hall session for aerospace company workers. He apparently didn't know the microphone attached to his lapel was still on when he said , '(If we) become the party of Roy Moore and Donald Trump, we are toast.'TV stations at the event picked up his comment. Flake's office told KNXV-TV that the senator said 'if we' before the Phoenix station's cameras started but that it had nothing more to add. Flake made a surprised expression when someone pointed out the microphone afterward.Flake has been an outspoken critic of Trump and announced in a forceful speech on the Senate floor last month that he would not seek re-election next year. He acknowledged that he could not win a GOP primary in the current political climate.Flake also has criticized Moore, who is facing allegations of sexual misconduct against teenage girls decades ago and calls to drop his bid for the U.S. Senate. Flake said he would 'vote for the Democrat' if he were in Alabama and had to choose between Moore and Democratic challenger Doug Jones. In the exchange with Flake, Mesa Mayor John Giles appeared to tell the senator to run for higher office.'I am not throwing smoke at you, but you're the guy,' Giles said. 'Just for fun, think about how much fun it would be, just to be the foil, you know, and point out what an idiot this guy is.'Giles didn't mention those comments in a statement to the TV station.'As a lifelong conservative Republican, I am troubled when candidates like Roy Moore send the wrong message about my party's ethics and policies,' he said.
  • The Texas driver of a truck sporting a large anti-Trump window decal was arrested Thursday, the Houston Chronicle reports. >> Read more trending news The truck, and its driver, Karen Fonseca, gained notoriety after a sheriff threatened a charge of disorderly conduct for the decal reading, “(EXPLETIVE) TRUMP AND (EXPLETIVE) YOU FOR VOTING FOR HIM.”  Fort Bend County Sheriff Troy E. Nehls posted a photo of the truck Wednesday on Facebook saying, “If you know who owns this truck or it is yours, I would like to discuss it with you.” The photo, which was met with spirited debate by Facebook commentors, has since been removed. Fonseca was booked in jail for an unrelated fraud charge.  The sheriff’s office released this statement in response to the attention the situation received: 'The Sheriff made the post on his Personal page. The objective of the post was to find the owner/driver of the truck and have a conversation with them in order to prevent a potential altercation between the truck driver and those offended by the message. Since the owner of the truck has been identified, the Sheriff took down the post. Due to the hate messages he has been receiving towards his wife and children, the Sheriff will not be commenting on the matter further.' Of the decal Fonseca said, “It's not to cause hate or animosity. It's just our freedom of speech and we're exercising it.”
  • Six consecutive losses had Duke angry and motivated on Senior Day at Wallace Wade Stadium. The result was an offensive eruption Georgia Tech was helpless to stop.Shaun Wilson caught two touchdown passes and threw another, Brittain Brown ran for 116 yards and a score, and the Blue Devils kept their bowl hopes alive with a 43-20 victory over the Yellow Jackets on Saturday night.Duke (5-6, 2-5 ACC) fell behind 14-3 early in the second quarter before dominating the rest of the way, including outscoring the Georgia Tech 23-0 in the second half to snap their losing streak.'When you break a six-game losing streak, it's more than just a sigh of relief,' quarterback Daniel Jones said. 'It was a lot of fun to play as we did as a team today and come out on top. 'Wilson caught swing passes of 11 and 16 yards from Jones for touchdowns and threw a trick-play, 4-yard touchdown on a jump pass at the line of scrimmage to tight end Daniel Helm.Jones completed 18 of 26 passes for 177 yards and ran for 91 yards and a score to lead the Blue Devils' rally. Brown's contributions on the ground gave Duke a season-high 319 rushing yards.'They went through us like we weren't even there,' Yellow Jackets coach Paul Johnson said. 'We couldn't get the ball and by the time we got it, we were down 17. We just couldn't keep up with them.'TaQuon Marshall carried 20 times for 140 yards and a touchdown for the Georgia Tech (5-5, 4-4), which dropped to 0-5 on the road this season. The Blue Devils' runaway surge put the Yellow Jackets' triple-option offense in the uncomfortable position of having to pass, and Marshall completed just 3 of 13 attempts for 82 yards with a touchdown and an interception.THE TAKEAWAYGeorgia Tech: The Yellow Jackets must now beat rival Georgia next week to guarantee bowl-eligibility. They could potentially sneak in with a 5-6 record if not enough teams qualify for a bowl game. The Yellow Jackets are playing only 11 regular season games after their Sept. 16 matchup at Central Florida was cancelled due to Hurricane Irma.Duke: The Blue Devils lost by a touchdown or less four times during their six-game losing streak, and had the ball on the final drive with a chance to tie in all four games. They made sure this one wasn't close, outscoring Georgia Tech 40-6 after falling into that 14-3 hole.TURNING POINTMarshall ran in an 8-yard touchdown to give Georgia Tech a 20-13 lead with 2:06 remaining in the first half, but that would be the last positive for Yellow Jackets. They allowed Duke to march 72 yards and tie the score just 26 seconds before halftime, and Jones led the Blue Devils 75 yards on the opening drive of the second half for a touchdown to give Duke its first lead, and one it would hold the rest of the way.'The end of the first half killed us again,' Johnson said. 'They came down and tied the game up..then they come out and score again. We go three-and-out and that was pretty much it.'BUSTING OUTDuke was held under 20 points in each of its six losses leading up to Saturday's 43-point outburst. It was their highest-scoring game of the season against an FBS opponent.'We got back to running that ball again and got back to what Duke does well,' Brown said. 'It shouldn't have been like that. We knew we had a high-powered offense to do what we did tonight.'UP NEXTGeorgia Tech: The Yellow Jackets host No. 7 Georgia in a rivalry showdown to finish the regular season.Duke: The Blue Devils conclude the regular season at Wake Forest and can clinch a spot in a bowl game with a win.___More AP college football: http://collegefootball.ap.org and http://www.twitter.com/AP_Top25
