There's always that moment in a Shook Foil song where it careens into something wonderful. Everything that precedes it can be predictably rote and uninspiring, but then there's this shifting of gears and all of the sudden the amazing is washing over you in ecstatic waves. "Balk," the lead track from the band's upcoming debut full length, The Tethered Life, is not one of those songs in the sense that there's no low point for the group to climb out of; things sound pretty great from the get go. But when the band leaps out of the classic psychedelia of the opening verse and into the bounce and verve of the next section, I can't help but be reminded of all those moments when Shook Foil thwarts mediocrity by finding the perfect melody, vocal inflection, bridge, breakdown, riff, groove, or whatever to lift a floundering song to the next level. I'm not ready (yet) to declare the band great, but this is undeniably what great bands do-tirelessly search and strive for something more compelling and potent.
