This exhibition, drawn from the collection on view in two parts, includes nearly 80 engravings, woodcuts, etchings, lithographs, and aquatints examining the perpetual theme of war and peace. Plains of Mars features works of art from some of the most virtuoso printmakers in history. The works—by artists from Britain, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, and Switzerland—depict 325 years of conflicts ranging roughly from the French invasion of Italy in 1494 to the end of the Napoleonic wars in 1814 and their aftermath. Part Two will explore brutal scenes of battle, the imagery of diplomacy, and will conclude with hopeful scenes of peace and accord.
