The Play of Herod is one of Atlanta's longest-running Christmas traditions. Two parts of the Christmas story unfold in a medieval ceremony of simple gestures and ancient, haunting melodies. This drama of mysterious beauty tells a tale of awestruck shepherds, kings come from afar to worship a baby, a King Herod clinging to power and the bloody slaughter of children. The Play of Herod is sung in Latin, with a consort of period instruments. English translations are projected above the action.
