Storms, high winds whip through Georgia

Much of the force from last night's heavy weather was felt northwest of Atlanta, particularly in the Rome-Floyd County area. Around 7:00 p.m. last night high winds tore the roof off Southern Pipe and Supply on Second Avenue in Rome. The owner, Kevin Belk, says he still plans to be ...

North Georgia Tornado January 30th

The detection rate for tornadoes on Doppler is very high, sadly so is the false alarm rate. You may die if you rely on and wait for so-called "Tornado Sirens". I did a screen grab of the Atlanta hourly weather forecast off a well know weather company website for that day, it showed cloudy with a 10% chance of rain! The 1000-500mb thickness gives a generalized pattern of the mid-level jet stream flow and is a proxy for temperature though mean virtual temperature. In other words low values are cold and high values are warm. The hottest weather is within and near 582 and above.

The weather pause that refreshes but not quite

Another break in the heat but like the last time a surge in humidity lessens the comfort factor. But also like the last break it means rain hopes are kept alive. Hotter weather to make a come-back before the month is done but still no reason to think 100s return this summer. Here is a look at the medium range forecast and some tidbits about August weather patterns.

Powerful storm hammers part of metro area

More storms and more damage on Thursday night but nothing widespread. Lightning strikes in Fayette County caused minor injuries. One of the people, Heather Scott was struck by lightning at her home. “You just felt the jolt.  The jolt where it hit the table and knocked the table down.” Scott ...
