Hearts be still - we have good traffic news. Several long term bridge closures in Georgia’s most populous county just wrapped or are about to finish.
A late April trip to Reykjavik and the surrounding countryside beauty of Iceland meant my wife Momo and I would not only visit Iceland for the first time, but we would also deal with the Airport MARTA stop’s six-week closure.
National Work Zone Awareness Week has just wrapped. The annual April reminder is a nod to the tireless construction workers, who put themselves in danger to build and repair the roads.
Captain Herb Emory was a legendary 95.5 WSB traffic reporter, staunch public servant, and honorary police officer who died while doing all three things.
This time around, Atlantans will get to see an odd spectacle without major strain on the roads. That is a far cry from what Georgia experienced in 2017.
When one high school student dies - for any reason - it is a tragedy. When one dies in a drunk and/or reckless driving crash, whether their fault or not, it is a travesty. When five from the same school die in wrecks in six months, there is not a word to properly describe it.
GDOT’s announcement of the full closure of South Cobb Drive came a few days before it went into effect.

Following another vehicle too closely gets worse, the bigger the front car is. The preponderance of big rigs on the Atlanta road system can test other drivers’ patience for various reasons. But everyone should remember that driving directly behind a tractor trailer puts a car right in a blind spot. And when things go wrong and someone rear ends a big rig, the trailing car always loses that battle and sometimes tragically.
A day that invites the masses to enjoy the Earth’s warmth and comfort puts more autos on the roads.
Atlanta Public Schools implemented speed cameras last fall and, after a grace warning period, issued around 41,000 speeding citations in the 10 different school zones in the first three months.
These are just songs; they are art. None contains actual advice or is necessarily based on real events. But since driving is a huge part of our culture, we should not have a blind spot to these sometimes musically glorified misgivings.
Smartphones debuted as the majority of Millennials were at, in, or near driving age. Texting became a phenomenon less than ten years before that. The advent of those technologies brought a spike in distracted driving well before Gen Z’ers got behind the wheel.
A large number of problems on I-75 in this area involve tractor trailers. This is most likely simply due to the fact that freight is a huge presence all through the state. And as I-75 stretches to the far north or far south of the metro area, the freight percentage increases.
